The Alta View Clinic/Hospital project marked a pivotal moment for Intermark Steel, propelling the company into a new realm of opportunities. Matt Blaser, the Owner, received an unexpected phone call from the VP of Sales at Schuff Steel, the largest fabricator and erector in the United States. They had just secured the Alta View project and learned that Matt had transitioned from Okland to establish a miscellaneous steel fabrication shop. Following a visit to the Price facility to assess Intermark’s capabilities, a deal was struck even before power was restored to the shop. Intermark was tasked with fabricating an unusually large heavy stair that cantilevers to each landing without any support from below. During construction, temporary columns provided support, but once they were removed, the stair landings sagged. Tensions escalated as IHC, Okland, the engineer, and Schuff pointed fingers, while Intermark faced non-payment for the work completed. In a bid to resolve the situation, Matt Blaser took matters into his own hands, donning his welding hood to correct the stair. A point cloud survey was conducted, capturing millions of data points to accurately model the stair’s tilt—both side-to-side and front-to-back—within 1/32 of an inch. Intermark collaborated with Okland and other subcontractors to accommodate tread variations, while Matt personally trimmed the exterior of the stair to ensure it appeared plumb, level, and square. However, the internals of the stair were misaligned by over 3/4 of an inch. This extraordinary problem-solving effort and dedication caught the attention of Schuff Steel, leading to the awarding of the remaining miscellaneous scope for fabrication and erection. Ultimately, the contract grew from $71,000 to over $277,000, solidifying Intermark’s reputation for exceptional project management and a succeed-at-all-costs attitude, which opened the door to larger projects in the future.
